The Szechuan pepper cheese is a fresh, but creamy farmers cheese with a spicy aftertaste. The makers were looking for a new type of herb cheese, and the result is this tasty pepper cheese. This young matured cheese is made from raw milk, to which the aromatic Chinese Szechuan pepper is added. Thanks to the spicy taste of this pepper and the fact that this cheese is ripened extra long, it has a strong taste and a lovely aroma.
The Szechuan pepper cheese is made in a little town in the province Zuid-Holland: Streefkerk. There, it’s produced by a Dutch family of cheese makers, that have been doing so for over 300 years. For the production of this special cheese they only use raw cows milk. However, this milk doesn’t come from their own cows, but from the cows from next door. For this reason this cheese is sometimes called ‘the neighbors cheese’.
